Growing Opportunities

It has been an exciting year for Master Gardeners Growing Opportunities (MG-‐GO) committee particularly for those volunteering at Girls Rehabilitation Facility (GRF, a minimum-security juvenile rehabilitation center in Kearny Mesa for girls 14 -17 years old). In the past year, we've provided horticulture education to over 1,200 youth and adults involved in the juvenile justice system.

At GRF the Growing Opportunities gardening program - a collaborative undertaking of UCCE San Diego County Master Gardeners, the Probation Department, and San Diego County Office of Education's Juvenile Court and Community Schools - is blossoming into an inspiring model of hands-on horticulture education and sustainable gardening practices in unlikely urban environments.

December in the Garden

It's time to trim the tree - not in the garden, but one inside where friends and family gather for holiday festivities. This month gardeners happily join with everyone in seasonal celebrations. Still it's wise to keep an eye on the skies to be sure landscapes get the water required and the protection needed in a cold spell. When shopping for gifts at a favorite nursery, pick-up some cool-season color to brighten beds and borders until spring. End this joyous season looking forward to a new gardening year, with all its promise and pleasures ahead.
