Feed Camellias

Three holidays - St. Patrick's, Memorial Day and Fourth of July - are easy reminders that it's time to feed camellias. If you missed the first feeding, just start feeding now to help promote next season's flowering. Purchase an azalea or camellia plant food and follow label directions to apply. Or mix your own. The San Diego Camellia Society recommends 1 part blood meal to 4 parts cottonseed meal. One-gallon container plants feast on a tablespoon; in-ground shrubs like two cups. Scatter fertilizer, but don't disturb feeder roots by scratching into the soil. Water in and add a layer of mulch to help hold in moisture in the hot months ahead.
