Container Gardens

Half barrels and redwood tubs are a popular donated item to school gardens. They are acceptable and decorative alternatives to a framed bed and are especially good for planting items that would be invasive in the open garden such as mint, oregano, asparagus, raspberries, and potatoes. Drill several 1 inch drainage holes in the bottom of half barrels. When filling a container leave a 1 to 3 inch basin below the lip for watering and mulch. Use a light soil mix. Containers are high maintenance and need to be fertilized and watered often. Small containers and some containers on wheels can be moved easily indoors at night for cold protection.
